How do I care for my gold and silver jewelry?

In order to enjoy your treasures for a long time, it is important to take care of them and store them properly. Your jewelry likes it when you clean it from time to time with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove fine dirt particles. For heavier dirt, a soft toothbrush, lukewarm water, and dishwashing detergent are best (please never use harsh chemicals!).
Gold and silver pieces without precious stones or pearls are usually insensitive to the sun, a full bath, or sweating during sports. But of course, extremes are never good. Bear in mind that your jewelry will change its character over time as you wear it – but that’s exactly what makes it special. My motto when washing your hands is: better leave the ring on your finger before you leave it in someone else’s toilet (by the way, this motto doesn’t apply when cleaning!). If the silver has oxidized unintentionally, special silver cleaning cloths or dipping baths can also help.

What does the marking 585, 750, 375 and 925 mean?

The small three-digit numbers indicate how many parts (weight) of a gold alloy consist of pure gold. The starting value for fine gold is 1,000 parts (pure, unalloyed gold). This is called the fineness of the alloy. The hallmarking (stamping) of a piece of gold jewelry with 750, 585, or 375 means that the gold content is 750 of 1,000 parts, 585 of 1,000, or 375 of 1,000 – i.e. the alloy contains 75%, 58.5%, or 37.5% pure gold. The fineness of 925 silver is 925/1000 (sterling silver). The alloy, therefore, consists of 92.5% pure silver and added copper (nickel is no longer used!).

How is blackened silver made?

A special patina (glaze) is used to create an artificial aging or oxidized surface. During patination, the surface is covered with a layer of color and then further processed using various techniques such as scratching, brushing, etc. The depths of the piece of jewelry are emphasized by the darker coloring, while the heights are emphasized by the lighter coloring. But don’t worry: blackened silver does not visibly stain (e.g. on light-colored textiles). Can you be allergic to jewelry?

In most cases, the nickel that is often added causes reddening of the skin, itching, or eczema. Tips for people allergic to nickel: Avoid contact with objects containing nickel (costume jewelry, belt buckles, buttons, etc.) and when buying jewelry, make sure that the alloys do not contain nickel – e.g. only choose palladium white gold. Allergic reactions to precious metals are extremely rare. If you suspect an allergy, you can only be sure with the help of an epicutaneous test by a doctor.

How should I store my pieces of jewelry?

It is best to store your jewelry in a box with dividers and padding. That way, the pieces won’t bang and rub against each other. Chains like to be hung up or stored separately. This way you also avoid the hassle of untangling.

What do I have to pay attention to when wearing jewelry with precious stones, corals or pearls?

Greater caution is required with jewelry in which precious stones, corals, or pearls are incorporated. Some stones are sensitive to the sun or UV radiation, cosmetics, swimming pools, perspiration, moisture, etc. Gemstones can lose their color, change their colors, become dry or porous under the above-mentioned influences. Pearls and corals also do not become more beautiful when showering and through perfume and cosmetics – on the contrary, they lose their luster and become porous. This has nothing to do with their quality, but with the law of nature. To prolong the life of jewelry with gemstones, pearls, and corals, you should avoid the above-mentioned influences and follow the tips for storing jewelry.

What do the little stamps on the jewelry mean?

This stamping is called hallmarking. According to Austrian regulations, it must be applied to precious metal objects. The hallmark consists of the number of the fineness (e.g. 585, 750, 925) and a registered responsibility hallmark (name hallmark, factory, or company mark).
